SPEAKERS

Luz Michelle, Debbie Nigro, Charlie Ponger

Luz, Charlie:

Hey there you guys and welcome to the official scene agers. I'm Luz Michelle hanging with my second set of adoptive parents,

Debbie Charlie Luz:

And I am Charlie Ponger and I'm Danny Nigro. And today we decided we're going to do a topic that was inspired by an article in Vogue magazine called don't call them grandmas the enduring appeal of the senior fashion icon. Now, I have never considered myself a fashion icon until today. Because I said, Okay, what do they mean by this? What do they mean by this? What they're saying is that people on Tiktok are enamored with the coastal grandma effect, while others are trying to the fancy grandma aesthetic. And they're saying that the reason this is happening is because of the spirit of a generation, who some may be grandmas some maybe not, but they're older, that can now agree that they don't have to follow any rules because no rule as Grandma's going rule having been anointed one, we make our own freakin rules, okay. And what the article is also talking about is hearing a lot of, of information that how older women have felt they'd been invisible for many years, and that sometimes after seeing women who express themselves fully, they have felt the permission to go there again. So I'm giving out permission slips. For this act today was a slip Oh my god. So I'm gonna tell you what we did. Because I think there's a double meaning to today one, we're having fun because we always have fun love to make you guys laugh. Oh, my love the interaction between a younger generation older generation. So I was thinking Luz in her 40s, early 40s. Right. Like, you're like 42 Yeah. tip of the iceberg. And I got a T shirts older than her. Yeah, and Charlie not only has t shirts older than her but only has a T shirts, fashion statement, except for one outfit you're gonna hear about today. But I thought how fun would it be to get all my wacky clothes that everybody's always like kind of made fun of me because I'm over the top. I like to have fun with clothes. I have sparkly belts and sparkly jackets. And I have very fashionable fringy things I got feathers and bows and glasses and earrings. And you know after a while there I was like maybe I should think about talking to somebody about this. But then the Vogue article came out and I realized I'm in it's supported everything that you do correct. And, and I am giving myself permission today to have a lot of fun and I dragged Luz into it today. Now Luz is not so easy when it comes to it wasn't improvisation having fun. Here's what we can do improv fashion.

Charlie and Debbie:

You mean?

Luz, Charlie:

Very uncomfortable. I'm spiraling Debbie.

Debbie Charlie:

last week, I find the article I go listen, Luz Here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna bring all these crazy clothes. And then I'm going to dress up and show you what coastal grandma fashion grammar looks like. And I'm put the same clothes on you. Because now I understand you aspire to look like me, as opposed to me aspiring to look like you. Like mostly older women have tried to look younger, as evidenced by two short skirts and like what the hell was she thinking about? Right? She What are you thinking about? So thankfully, the world changed right on time and said, Okay, you people are in and let the younger people catch up. So Luz like i Okay, okay, I'll do that. That's fine. I think I'm a little uncomfortable, but I'll try it. So I pull up today. I'm walking out of my house to go by Dave and I've got my whole closet with me like everything. I'm dragging belts, shoes, things. He's like, whatever. And I walk in Luz like, I don't know. I don't know if I don't know. I'm a little uptight. I'm like, really Shut. Shut the hell up. clothes on.

Luz, Charlie:

She's like standing there in her bra. She's like, I'm like turn around.

Debbie Charlie:

Don't even my tits. I bought them. Memorial Sloan Kettering. What do you care about? And I said come on, you have to you have to push the push your envelope a little bit and get out of your comfort zones. You're gonna have a lot of fun with this. You know, we're not that far off in size. If it's too tight, don't slip depends just too loose. Don't do that. What are we there's nobody cares. And then we said we're going to do this fashion show, which you're going to see Charlie's gonna edit it all together. And I said, Where are we going to do this in your house? Charlie? What's the best light he goes nowhere

Charlie and Debbie:

we don't have studio lights

Debbie Charlie:

here. Yeah, but you had the best thing of all. Explain what you have. I have

Charlie Ponger & Debbie Nigro 04:24

my Grateful Dead hippie. Door bead thing party things are like 1972 So we gotta

Debbie Charlie:

do it with all these beats hanging where we come out of Yeah, me and my outfit coastal grandma and then lose in the same outfit.

Luz, Charlie:

I look so good. I love working adult I look like an adult

Charlie, Luz:

proper adult. You should wear one of those outfits for one of your standup show something especially

Luz, Charlie:

I want to ruin any surprise was at this outifit and I was like, Man, if I dress like this every day I get so much shit done.

Debbie Nigro:

Can I just ask you before we talk about the emotions that went on just now in terms of my style of dressing. I'm older than you. What did you think?

Luz, Charlie:

Very hip very put together very, you know, very sharp. I look like I just I look good. I look fresh. I look ready. I just Yes. And then it's the accessories too. It's not just the clothes, like the earrings, the glasses and the hats, the scarf everything.

Debbie Charlie:

And feather out of the head of the last act was kind of funny. It was pretty funny. Charlie, we said, Charlie, just just show up and just keep wearing that T shirt. Every, guys are so easy.

Charlie and Debbie:

You dress me up though. The last

Debbie Charlie:

one and you should definitely look at the video that goes along with this and the or the whatever Charlie is going to do to edit it together. What do you understand now as a man versus women with clothing? Why we're always late.

Charlie and Debbie:

I certainly know why I will remain single for the rest of my

Debbie Charlie:

life. And a lot going on. It was fine.

Charlie and Debbie:

It was like girls dress up day or something. That's what I was thinking of, you know?

Debbie Nigro:

So what are some of the things that you fashion wise? felt different about emulating women who are making their own rules?

Luz, Charlie:

I think for me, it's the accessories. I get nervous with belts like I have no I don't have I told you I don't own a belt. I don't have a belt. I look at belt and I don't I don't know where to go. I don't know where to start. I'm overwhelmed. I don't know how you're supposed to wear them. I don't know which outfit goes with. Really, really. So that's why when you took out your belts, like five in a row is like oh, i Those are nice. I would have picked them. How cool is that? I think I collected belts. I was like her doll. I was Debbie's doll

Debbie Charlie:

is a very big theme. Vintage clothing is a very big theme right now. So everything I own is vintage. which used to be called Old clothes. But now they're vintage and I'm in and it's I just wanted I just wanted to make a point about people taking a shot of being something that they're not typically used to being because and comfortable with and comfortable with it and pushing the envelope a little bit. Why not to be just fashion but just generally in life. You know, risky to regret. It is a very big theme of mine. And you don't want to be laying on a bed where somebody says last right and you're like I should have worn that belt.

Luz, Charlie:

Yeah, exactly. I had that. I went out of my comfort zone. You really did I really even the command of the curtain. I was like oh my god, I'm doing this.

Charlie, Luz:

How about when you got dizzy because you were wearing glasses and I'm gonna throw up like I took

Debbie Charlie:

something reading glasses that are cloudy and I can see. So anyway, that was great. I think we had a lot of fun

Charlie and Debbie:

so much fun. We did. She she thought she was Janet Jackson. She said

Luz, Charlie:

Well, Bill see why Come on. That was total Rhythm Nation. All right.

Debbie Charlie:

I own a Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation often still think I can wear it out. It's pretty impressive. Oh my gosh. Right.

Luz, Charlie:

It looks fantastic on you. Fantastic on all of us. You know,

Debbie Charlie:

people I'll be meeting people out, right? They'll go and meet at the bar. Okay. And they're all sitting there and looking very like normal. I walk in like, like electric.

Charlie and Debbie:

You guys were so intense in there. And I was like, Deb, can I say something? You're like, No. And I'm like, again, this is what? Bill burrs, right?

Debbie Charlie:

The problem with that don't call them grandmas is. We often don't remember what the hell we just had on. Which is why so we can take some notes. Because if we're gonna wear the same outfit, somebody's gotta remember.

Luz, Charlie:

Yeah, like we gotta keep everything together. Like this was the Alpha decision. The accessories leave it right here.

Charlie and Debbie:

Let me let me ask you a question. Yeah. How many times do you change your clothes before you go out?

Debbie Charlie:

You know, depends on how fat I feel. Oh, really? Yeah, that's been a lifetime. How about you Luz?

Luz, Charlie:

It depends what Spanx and Ben watch. So it all depends.

Charlie and Debbie:

Are you changing at least twice before you leave the house?

Luz, Charlie:

100%

Charlie and Debbie:

Yeah, at least twice because

Debbie Charlie:

two times every day. The bloat ometer is different. Yeah.

Luz, Charlie:

full blown hurricane in the probably the bedroom looks like afterwards.

Debbie Charlie:

Really? Yeah. Because some days you feel feel more attractive than others. Oh, and if you feel good about yourself, you can put something on be like alright, you know just casual but if you're feeling off or bloated or depressed or hot or whatever, whatever you're putting on a cutting it until you get whatever's comfortable and then do you come out and go Do I look fat in these? You never have to ask each should really should never ask a guy that question because, or anybody else because you don't want the real answer.

Charlie and Debbie:

But we always say no, you look great. Let's get the fuck going.

Debbie Charlie:

No, Dave said to me one time and I'll never forget this. I walked out and I go so what do you think Do I Do I Do I look fat in this thing? And he goes, You look a little boxy.

Luz, Charlie:

Oh my god. I'm going back. I was dads.

Debbie Charlie:

I said boxy. I look boxy.

Charlie and Debbie:

He goes he actually said that. He goes know the rules.

Debbie Charlie:

He goes that just makes you look a little boxy. No. Well, obviously I can't friggin where it now. Did you start crying? No, but I just did. You're mad at him. No, it was like I was already in a deep sweat. This was outfit number 16 and Unlike the best one the best one about an outfit I love when friends are honest and friends should tell somebody else. No, you know what that does not work for you. You're going out like that? Because here's my here's my funny story. I'm going to Washington DC some years ago to some really big Italian American Oh, the N.I.A.F. after I randomly ran into National Italian American waving to me across the thing. It was unbelievable hysterical. Well, it was it was stunning. It was the you know, you love your heritage. And we all are proud of our heritage.

Charlie and Debbie:

The National Italian American Foundation was a black tie event. Right? Black tie, Milo was there he sang remember? Yes.

Debbie Charlie:

And the thing about the event that I really loved was really high class, well educated the prominent members of our society as opposed to some of the guys you mentioned. So anyway, I last minute with what I'm going to wear and I had this dress and it was black. And it had you know a lot a lot going on lot goin on, up over here down over there and had some things and my girlfriend at 11 o'clock at night. I said just come over. Just take a look because I have to leave on a train tomorrow morning very early. What do you think about this at 11 o'clock at night? And she looks at me straight? She goes, Do you have anything else? I said don't son-of-a-bitch. You don't so I get now I'm nervous wreck that I don't fit right. And what am I going to do? I shot at 11 o'clock at night. So I hop off the train in Washington DC. I hail a taxi. I asked them where the closest dress door is. He said like I don't know someplace in Maryland. i So how much does that cost to get me there and whatever I was now in a dressing room in Maryland state of being event. We're trying on all these things like shoot me and ended up with some off the shoulder thing like a ball gown so appropriate. And thank goodness too, because I was you know, it was like Gina Lollobrigida was there. Yeah, they were all they were all down and I can come in look on Dean Martin's daughter, right. Jerry Vale was holding my hand like he was my great uncle. I should have that dresses in my closet. I saved I should I should have brought that today. You would have been really impressed. Anyway, you do another

Charlie and Debbie:

fashion show here. I mean, you were like, it was like little girl dress up day over here.

Debbie Charlie:

Here's what I want to point out about what people think other people notice about them that they don't. Let's just review you go out right. Do you really notice or remember anybody else's outfit? Once you leave your house that you think everybody's looking at you? Not really unless it's highly unusual? Yeah, yeah. highly unusual. Yeah, right. Otherwise you don't remember anything? No. Like what was highly unusual and quite amusing. This week was Martha Stewart appearing in only an apron hot? Yes. 21 years old.

Charlie Ponger:

She's 81? 81 years old

Debbie Luz Charlie:

in an apron. Brawl is naked underneath. Hawking Green Mountain Coffee. Rendy

Charlie & Debbie:

I have to go out. And honestly, I think I am.

Debbie Charlie:

I wish I was so she lives she lives near here. You know what you do? You knock on the door wearing an apron.

Luz, Charlie:

Oh my god. Yeah. Like what a hot cup of coffee and a muffin.

Charlie and Debbie:

Look at that. Next you got the neck thing? Yeah, you guys could be in the bushes taking videos.

Debbie Charlie:

I think you're not gonna do it with him. And yeah, the muffin I don't think she eats her own muffins, because she looked pretty fit in that naked apron picture. And I I met

Charlie and Debbie:

her once. More than once. Really. I met her at this party a couple years ago, in this in this cabin that this guy had. And it was a winter party and she and I were talking and she was doing the hair thing behind the ear and looking down and she was behaving like a really little cute

Debbie Charlie:

teenager. The hair thing behind the ear you notice that?

Charlie and Debbie:

Well guys notice when a girl might be interested, slightly interested, sat shut a hair behind the ear behind the ears a big one. Really?

Debbie Charlie:

What is another tip?

Luz, Charlie:

Now I gotta look out for that.

Charlie and Debbie:

If they kind of look down at the ground, and they're doing the hair thing behind the ear, you're basically in.

Debbie Charlie:

You'll never know what Luz. You got one side shaved. Yeah. Now like I'm like, what? She's rubbing her side of her shaved

Charlie and Debbie:

head. What? I don't know. I Dream of Jeannie.

Debbie Charlie:

You know what I love about you. I love that you're so unique. Yeah, I really love that you're so unique isn't how you look how you dress how you act your shirt. You're joyful. And you're funny as hell. You're good mom. And you say you're crazy mom, but you are a good mom. Because we can't even finish the show. You gotta go.

Luz Michelle:

By good mom.

Debbie Charlie:

I love I love that you joined us for this. And I feel we have such good karma. We

Charlie and Debbie:

do. It wasn't planned. It was

Luz, Charlie:

not rehearsed. Well.

Charlie and Debbie:

I met her. Right. And I was like, you gotta come on the show. Yeah, cuz I'd watched her do stand up in all places. We were in where are we east? bumfuck over there. Library

Luz Michelle:

Bubble fuck. Yeah. And

Debbie Charlie:

by the way, the fact that she decided to listen to you on Father's Day alone. Yeah. In a library.

Charlie and Debbie:

Myself. Yeah. That's what I saw later. I'm like, I got to run into this person somehow.

Debbie Charlie Luz:

And I trusted your judgment. Because you and I have good sense of Yeah. You said, Hey, let's bring somebody else into the mix here. And let's see how they do. That's great. Let's try new personalities. We do welcome funny people. Debbie Charlie:

I propose the idea and the woman's like excuse. Different reason like you just do a big like home health care company. And I go you know, we should do it. And she's like,

Charlie and Debbie:

she's probably understanding because you talk so fast. You have to slow it down.

Debbie Charlie:
